Girl Friends - 09/09/1931

CHESTER GOULD (1900 - 1985) was studying law when he got a job doing sports cartoons for the City Daily Oklahomian. He later worked for the Hearst papers and drew Radio Lanes, Fillum Fables, and Modern Millie. However, his greatest fame, of course, came when he sold Dick Tracy to the Chicago Tribune and New York Daily News in 1931. He continued to write and draw the strip for many years.

This original art to a The Girl Friends comic strip daily dated 9-9-31, just two months before Gould started Dick Tracy. This artwork is in excellent condition, with moderate overall aging, and has a image area of 20" x 6".

Gassoline Alley - 07/14/1987

JIM SCANCARELLI (b. ?) began assisting Dick Moores on the classic newspaper strip Gasoline Alley in 1979, and took over the strip completely in 1986.

This original art daily comic strip for Gasoline Alley is dated 7-14-87. The image area measures 15.5" x 4.75" and the art is in excellent condition.

Channel Chuckles - 07/30/1961

BIL KEANE (b. 1922) is a self-taught artist who created the comic strips Silly Willy and the long-running Channel Chuckles, but is, of course, best-known as the creator of The Family Circus, which he launched in 1960.

This is the original Sunday comic strip art for Channel Chuckles, dated 7-30-61. The image area measures 21.5" x 14" and the art is in very good condition, with light overall aging.

Flash Gordon - 11/09/1974

DAN BARRY (1923-1997) began working as a comic book artist in 1941. He worked on Airboy, Blue Bolt, and Doc Savage. From 1947 to 1948, he drew the Tarzan comic strip. In 1951 Barry revived the Flash Gordon comic strip for King Features Syndicate, which he wrote and illustrated until 1990.

BOB FUJITANI (Bob Fuje) (b. 1920) was a prolific artist during the Golden Age of Comics, working for many comic book publishers such as Avon, Dell, Lev Gleason, and Quality. He joined Dan Barry on the Flash Gordon comic strip during the late 1960s as an inker. In the 1990s, Fujitani worked on the Rip Kirby comic strip.

This is the original art to a Flash Gordon comic strip daily dated 11-9-74. This piece is in excellent condition, and has a image area of 13" x 3.75".

Mutt & Jeff - 11/13/1966

AL SMITH (1902-1986) ghosted the Mutt and Jeff strip for years (as well as drawing the topper, Cicero's Cat), but it was not until the death of creator Bud Fisher that Smith began signing his own name to the strip. He was active in the National Cartoonist's Society, and helped many upcoming talents find work in the industry.

This original art Sunday comic strip for Mutt and Jeff is dated 11-13-66. The image area measures approximately 17.25" x 19" and the art is in very good condition, with some slight moisture warping and overall aging. The top tier was cut and retaped

Li'l Abner - 08/24/1947

AL CAPP STUDIOS - Al Capp began the Li'l Abner strip as a daily in 1934, and added a Sunday strip a year later. He was notorious for using many assistants and "ghost" artists (including, at one point, Frank Frazetta), so it is impossible to determine the extent of his contribution to any given Li'l Abner strip, which is why most are credited to his studio.

This is the original daily comic strip art for Li'L Abner dated 8-24-47. The art has an image area of 19 " x 22" and the art is in very good condition with light overall aging and some moisture warping on the right side; the art was cut into several pieces and re-assembled with backing tape, the tape is somewhat loose at some points.

Catfish - 08/03/1975

ROGER BOLLEN (b. 1941) created the comic strips Catfish and Funny Business before finding his greatest success with Animal Crackers, launched in 1968. Bollen drew the strip until 1994, and has also illustrated several childrens' books.

This is the original Sunday comic strip art for Catfish, dated 8-3-75. The art is on very thin paper, and has been folded between the panels for mailing; there is a tear in the lower left corner at the edge of the panel. Otherwise the art is in very good condition. The image area measures 20.5" x 14".

Flash Gordon - 12/25/1955

MAC RABOY(1914 - 1967) began his comics career in 1940, working for the Harry "A" Chesler studio. He is most famous for his work on CAPTAIN MARVEL, JR., but also contributed art for the popular GREEN LAMA title. In the spring of 1948, he signed on with King features to illustrate the Flash Gordon Sunday page, and continued drawing the strip until his death in December, 1967.

This original art Sunday comic strip is dated 12-25-55. This piece is in excellent condition and has an image area of 18" x 13".

Winniw Winkle - 12/13/1939

MARTIN BRANNER (1888 - 1970) was a Vaudeville performer who went into cartooning after returning home from WWI. His most famous creation, Winnie Winkle, debuted in 1920, the first comic strip about a working woman. It was also a rare strip in which the characters grew and aged. Branner worked on the strip until a stroke in 1962 forced him to retire, whereafter his assistant, Max Van Bibber took over.

This is the original art for a Winnie Winkle daily comic strip, dated 12-13-39.The art is in very good condition with moderate aging overall, and heavy glue stains in the lower margin. Image area measures 19.75" x 5.5".

The Gumps - 10/30/1935

SIDNEY SMITH (1877-1935) worked on the minor Buck Nix and Old Doc Yak strips before hitting it big with The Gumps, which he created in 1917. His success was highly publicized when he signed a million dollar contract ($100,000 per year for ten years) in 1922. In 1935 he signed a new contract giving him $150,000 per year but was killed on the way home from signing the contract when he wrecked his brand-new Rolls-Royce in a head-on collision.

This is the original art to a The Gumps comic strip daily dated 10-30-1935. There was a text correction in the second panel which resulted in the last two panels being cut away and then taped back together. There is very minor corner wear and some light printer's grease staining but, otherwise, this piece is in nice solid condition with an overall size of 21.75" x 6.75". This strip possesses rather cryptic qualities in that it was published on the day after Smith died (he died on Oct. 29, 1935) and the title of the strip is "What Might Have Been" which has a financial theme.

GENE AHERN (1895-1960) went to work for NEA in 1914 after training at the Chicago Art Institute. After creating several lackluster strips, he hit success in 1923 with Our Boarding House, featuring Major Hoople. It's success led to a variant called Room and Board featuring Judge Puffle.

This is the original art for a Room and Board daily dated 12-22-1943. With the exception of a few very minor stains, this piece is in excellent condition and has an overall size of 12.75" x 12".

JACK RICKARD (1932-1983) was a prolific cartoonist best known for a long stint on MAD Magazine, as well as providing artwork for many movie posters, including The Pink Panther, Dutchess and the Dirtwater Fox, and more.

This is the original art for a Pauline McPeril Sunday dated Jan. 1, 1967. The Last panel features characters from the Miss Peach comic strip, an image of Alfred E. Neuman, and Dondi in a business suit. On back, is written: To Ben Oda, who was probably the letterer for this strip. Out Our Way - 11/06/1940

J. R. WILLIAMS (1888-1957) had an adventurous life as a rancher and Cavalry soldier before turning to cartooning. In 1921 he created the successful Out Our Way comic strip, which he continued to work on until his death.

Casper the Friendly Ghost - xx/xx/1974

ERNIE COLON (b. 1931) worked for Harvey Comics for twenty years, drawing RICHIE RICH, CASPER, SPOOKY, HOT STUFF, and many more titles. He also contributed many horror stories to the Warren line, drew for the short lived Atlas Seaboard comics on Tiger Man and Grim Ghost, and later became a freelancer for DC.

This is the original art for one of the two comic strips that were found at the bottom of the two text pages of nearly every issue of the juvenile line of Harvey comics during the 1960s and '70s. This one features Casper the Friendly Ghost in a Cub Scout themed strip which was published in 1974. This art has an image area of 4.75" x 18" with an overall size of 7.25" x 22.5". This piece has a few missing art correction stats, moderate glue staining in the margin areas, and minor edge and corner wear. Otherwise, this piece is in nice solid condition.

The Good Old Days - 05/21/1960

ERWIN HESS (1913-1999) worked for Dell Publications from 1939 until the 1950s, mainly illustrating the movie adaptations and television properties, such as Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. He worked on the Captain Midnight comic strip from 1942 until 1945. It was with his comic panel strip, The Good Old Days, which ran from 1947 to 1981, that he is most fondly remembered.

This is the original art to a The Good Old Days comic panel dated 5-21-1960. This art has very minor wear to the margin areas and some very light staining but, otherwise, is in excellent condition with an overall size of 17" x 12.5".
